There are several different flashy knives life the switch blade or the flick knife but perhaps none so flashy as a Balisong in the hands of an expert. Although there arevarious balisong blades, all the Balisong knives have the same unique and versatile design. This is a knife that like many others, has its blade fold into its handle but in the case of a Balisong, that handle is in 2 halves which separate to allow the blade to go inside. With the handle separating it means that the blade can be inserted and taken out in a variety of ways but knowing the various different ways is perhaps something of an art. I think it is safe to say that almost everyone that owns a Balisong would want to show off their skills with it which in this case means not cutting something up but rather opening and closing the blade fast in many different ways. It was this need for Balisong owners to look impressive which led to the knives being made illegal in many States and in many countries. As an owner would practice the art of opening and closing the blade, all too often they would cut themselves and cut themselves so badly on the sharp blade that they would need professional medical assistance to patch themselves up.
As the numbers of Balisong owners that were cutting themselves came to the attention of the law makers in the United States, they took action and made Balisong knives illegal. Similar things were happening in other countries to and so they too made Balisong knives illegal. Although these knives are still illegal in many countries to this day, at least now there are training Balisong knives available to buy so that people can learn the Balisong’s tricks without the fear of getting any cut, perhaps not even a scratch.
This impressive display that can be carried out with a Balisong knife probably came about in the Philippines where many of the knives are still made today as the Filipinos included the knives in their Marshall Art known as Kali. It was the flashy displays by the Filipino knife owners that tempted the US servicemen serving in the Philippines to take a Balisong home with them. In the US the ‘tricks’ looked equally impressive and so everybody in the US wanted one.
To cater to this growing need for a particular type of knife, prompted manufacturers in the US to make them at home. This meant that there were a lot of inexperienced Balisong knife owners in the US all trying to learn the skills and so it was at this time that many of them obtained cuts that needed professional medical attention. By 1956 the number of injuries by Balisongsowners suffering from knife wounds was so high that action was taken to make them illegal. Although Balisong knives areillegal in many countries to this day, many people still wish to learn the skills of easily and quickly opening and closing them and so there are now training Balisong knives available which are legal.
